Assertiveness Checklist

Written by Heather Wringe

Being assertive and knowing what you want is not the same as being hostile or belligerent. You just have to know what to say with confidence. Below is a quick checklist to help you reflect on your assertiveness and confidence.

  • I keep what I want to say clear and to the point

  • I look at the other person

  • I stand/sit upright and keep a calm tone of voice

  • I do not apologise unnecessarily

  • I am polite yet firm

  • I am relaxed and calm rather than angry

  • I remember to breathe

  • I am able to regulate my emotions

How many of these are true for you? What can you to shift those that are not?
